Infinos Gaiden is to the previous Infinos games what Darius Gaiden was to the previous Darius games. Not only did the visuals receive a massive upgrade which make them on par or even better than most arcade games from the 90's, but the music is done by legendary composer Hyakutaro Tsukumo (Thunder Force V\/VI, Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, Battle Crust) this time around as well. Stages are very distinct in theme and effects utilized, but also in gameplay. Some stages are about managing large crowds of enemies with your Red Waves, other expect you to make tricky shots behind you with the Blue Spread.The amount of visual detail is excellent, even moreso if you consider that this game was made entirely by one person (save for the music). Parallax scrolling is strongly utilized to give backgrounds more depth, each stage has its own special visual effects to make them stand out, and explosions feel satisfying.You control two pods and can shift them between two formations, which also alters the firing angle of your current subweapon to suit the situation. It's quite simple, but it works very well because of how the stages utilize it. Your pods deal contact damage to enemies, so you can use the pods to kill enemies right above and beneath you by having the pods ram into them. And by shifting the pods into the frontal formation, you can shove the pods right into bosses and other big enemies to deal tons of damage and kill them much quicker, at the risk of being very close to the enemy. It's a bit similar to how the bits work in R-Type, but the overall pacing is much faster.There is a problem where you can kill some of the larger more persistent enemies so quickly that the game ends up not throwing any enemies at you for a while since it didn't factor in those enemies being killed that quickly. Basically it could have used more bonus speedkill enemy waves to fill the gaps between those moments, because otherwise you can end up with 5 seconds of dead time. The game DOES spawn some extra enemies on speedkills, but not nearly enough. Scoring is incredibly straightforward, just shoot as many enemies as possible. Bosses feature a lot of destructible parts, and some parts of the larger enemies can be tricky to get to. The only thing missing is a ships remaining bonus at the end, which even previous Infinos games had. I wish there'd also be a bonus for not taking any damage to your barrier. There's also a problem where the zako spawns of the ST5 and ST7-1 bosses can be milked infinitely for points, which could be resolved by a boss timer for timeouts or reducing the zako point value to 0 in order to discourage milking. Else you have to spend a minute waiting to shoot the zakos over and over which isn't any fun. Though the game is seven stages long, there's a good amount of bonus stages in the Challenge Mode, and after defeating the ST6 boss you can enter Stage EX which is much harder than ST7 and also nets you an alternate ending. Challenge Mode allows you to practice stages, and even features a boss rush which you must complete with only four lives and no shields. Hard Mode gives some enemies new attacks and generally increases bullet speed, but overall the differences are not really felt, especially when you kill bosses so quickly like me that you don't even get to see the new attacks.Pros:- High-level arcade-like visual presentation- Overall solid stage design, manages to utilize a simple concept effectively- Hyakutaro Tsukumo strikes gold again with this soundtrack- Boss battles are all fun and unique- Contact damage for pods allows for a lot of aggressive play which keeps the learning curve steady and future playthroughs engaging- Bonus content for the devotedCons:- Hard Mode doesn't make a really noticeable difference- Missed potential for bonus enemy waves on speedkills8\/10.. A must-play for shmup fans. Hyakutaro Tsukumo's soundtrack is spectacular, and the designs of both enemies and backgrounds are impressive. As for gameplay, the powerup system is simple but effective, the controls are smooth and responsive and the levels are exciting to play over and over again. It has just about everything you could want from a STG.. Do you like fun? Then you now know the answer to the question "should I buy this game?"If you ever enjoyed shooting games in the late 80s or early 90s on either console or in the arcade, this game has got your back. And if you&re still not convinced, grab the demo!. Believe it or not, this is my first steam game purchase EVER! Yes, it\u00b4s true, this is my first steam game that I bought. I decided to buy it after playing the demo, being a fan of shmups old and new.Fantastic work, from the soundtrack and sound effects to the graphics. After playing and enjoying Picorinne Soft\u2019s previous title "Battle Crust" here on Steam, I was eagerly anticipating the release of this game and checking it out. It delivers. Infinos Gaiden is a continuation of the dev\u2019s \u201cInfinos\u201d series of shooters, horizontal scrollers that were previously offered as freeware and on other venues such as Playism. As with all of the dev\u2019s shump games, the focus is more on emulating the late 80\u2019s-early\/mid 90\u2019s style traditional shooter instead of the manic style shooter more common today. That means looser, less numerous bullet patters, environmental hazards, and a focus centered around weapon gimmicks, over being showered with bullet curtains and figuring out the nuances of elaborate scoring systems to best take advantage of them. The gameplay is relativity straightforward with a frugal weapon system similar to that of \u201cR-Type\u201d, but with it\u2019s own unique twist. It may seem unremarkable at an initial glance, but the simplicity works well for this game, because it is intuitive and makes the game very easy to pick up and play. It starts off relatively slow to draw you in, and gradually progresses in difficulty over the course of the game. Still, even someone with pretty average shmup skills would probably have a reasonable chance getting a no continue clear on the default difficulty at least in a short time frame with a little practice, making it less intimidating for the beginner or someone more casual. Assisting this is the addition of a challenge mode, where you can practice stages as you unlock them, and then unlock some additional things to extend the game even further. Ascetically, compared to the previous \u201cInfinos\u201d games, there is a noticeable jump in quality. It\u2019s hard not the notice the attention the detail and the craftsmanship that was put into making this game, as shown in the sprites and the stage progression. The dev seems to be improving and refining with each new project. There is a particularly awesome moment in stage 6, where you start off on the planet surface, and suddenly you\u2019re ascending rapidly into the sky, taking out enemy waves and sinking battleships on the way. You burst through the planet\u2019s outer atmosphere and the action packed BGM dims to a faint sound as you catapult into space then gradually reverts back to a normal (but slightly lower) volume as you reorient yourself and finish the stage. All of this was done with 2D pixel graphics. Moments like that show what a labor of love this game is and make you appreciate that games like this are still being made. For the soundtrack, Hyakutaro Tsukumo returns from \u201cBattle Crust\u201d for another round composing. Where as \u201cBattle Crust\u201d was done in full lo-fi FM synth to match the style of the game, Infinos Gaiden is interesting as it mixes some 16-bit like FM chiptune flair with the distinct PS1\/Saturn era style synth Tsukumo is well known for from his Technosoft days and beyond. This isn't a bad thing at all, as no one else makes melodramatic synth-rock sound appealing quite like Tsukumo does. I think the soundtrack most closely resembles his work on \u201cBlast Wind\u201d, since they both feature upbeat, energetic rock style tracks coupled with melancholy "crying" music to fit the more somber elements of the games. Overall it is unsurprisingly excellent. It\u2019s a bare bones release and that may irk those who are looking for things like achievements and such, but the core gameplay is solid and well worth the asking price. This game is especially a love letter to the old school shooter fan. The type of person who perks up when they hear words like "R-Type", "Darius", "Gradius", "Zanac", "Aleste" etc. I count myself among those people, and if that applies to you, than Ininos Gaiden is a required purchase.. Infinos Gaiden is a great game, I strongly recommend it for shoot em up fans and arcade game fans. The gameplay has a good level of difficulty and feels very balanced. The artistic value of the animation and music working together to present an enjoyable theme can't be understated. Don't hesitate to buy it if it looks appealing and you're not sure.
